Laboni Mahfuz

1969 - 2003

We mourn the irreparable loss of our dear friend Laboni, she was instrumental on making of Adhunika. No words can describe the spirit of this young soul.   Our thoughts are with her and the loved ones.   ~  Shahnaz

Following are the passages shared by her long time companion Mahfuz Imam:

I got to know her a bit too late, around 1984. I knew her whole family, her brothers and I were friends, but since she was at Bharoteshwary Homes most of the times, I did not know about this most important member of the family. She turned out to be the most important person of my life, my best friend, my soul mate, my life; my precious.

20 years of knowing her as my best friend taught me how to live, and let live.

We were batch mates. She finished her S.S.C (Secondary School Certificate, 10th grade) in 1984 from Bharoteshwary Homes and H.S.C (Higher Secondary school Certificate, 12th grade) in 1986 from Adamjee College. She finished her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Dhaka University in 1991.

She smile a lot. I was hooked, slowly but surely by her smile. When she smiled, her whole face would smile; you could see her soul smiling as well.

We eloped and got married 13th February 1989 (1st of Falgoon, the beginning of spring in Bengali calendar).

We came to the United States in 1991 (I came in June 1991, she came in February 1992). I was her project, and she was mine. We finished my Bachelor of Science in Electrical
Engineering in 1997.

Our first home started in one bedroom apartment in Gainesville, TX. We bought a house in summer of 2000. She made it a beautiful home over the last few years.

She was beautiful. She knew beauty. We painted our kitchen, our living room together. We completely remodeled one of our bathrooms all by ourselves. We have so much planned. Her garden was our retreat. Most mornings she would take her tea outside in our back porch, sit on the swing, and watch butterflies, hummingbirds, and let the nature enjoy her beautiful smile.

She was like a princess from a fairy tale. She knew no sin, she would cry and complain to me if someone were unfair to her. She was a fighter. She lived life to the fullest despite her sickness and the Torturous pain from her medications.

We went to the hospital for a routine test on the 18th Dec. 2003. She has been planning my birthday on the 22nd. She smiled in her hospital ICU bed that day. Her eyes were
glowing.

Her physical pain ended on the 23rd Dec. 2003 at 3:57 pm. I did not loose my best friend, I gained an angel.

~ Mahfuz
